At my daycare, the kids love working with popsicle sticks and exploring new art materials. I keep a wide selection of supplies on hand—Sharpies, scented markers, paint pens, oil pastels—and lately we’ve found a new favorite: chalk markers.

Chalk markers are a hit because they write and draw smoothly on many surfaces: paper, glass, plastic, and even stone. We’ve used them on rocks to make decorative paperweights that turned out beautifully.

Curious whether chalk markers would work on wood, we tested them on jumbo craft sticks. The markers adhered nicely and produced bright, bold designs. The kids were so delighted with the results that they spent about an hour decorating dozens of craft sticks to use as bookmarks.

These bookmarks are simple, fast, and ideal for group activities. Children can mix colors, draw patterns, write names, or create tiny scenes. Once dry, the chalk marker designs stay vivid on the wood and make sturdy, handmade bookmarks perfect for gifting.

Invite your kids to try this easy craft: make a stack of bookmarks for Dad for Father’s Day, give them as party favors, or swap them with friends at school.
