The Classic Cosmopolitan. Oh how I ADORE you!

I could reminisce about my Sex and the City days — truthfully, I still watch it — but I’ll save that for another time.
When my daughter was born 11 years ago, returning to work after maternity leave felt impossible. A degree in horticulture didn’t lend itself to evening shifts, and I wasn’t comfortable leaving my newborn with strangers. I needed a flexible way to bring in a little money while still being home in the evenings with my family.
So I became a part-time bartender. It was perfect: two or three nights a week, extra income, and no need for babysitters. Over time I picked up mixology and wine-pairing skills that proved useful — and fun — both at work and at home.
Playing bartender at family gatherings quickly became a favorite role. Cosmopolitans, in particular, evolved into a holiday tradition for the women in our family. They strike the ideal balance of tart and sweet, look festive in a martini glass, and feel delightfully sophisticated to sip.
While I’m not a professional in many arenas, I can confidently say I’m a pro behind the bar. One of my all-time favorite cocktails is the Classic Cosmopolitan.

Although this martini is simple to make, a few key techniques will elevate it from good to great.
First, start with chilled ingredients. I store vodka in the freezer and refrigerate Cointreau and cranberry juice. Pouring warm liquids over ice accelerates melting and dilutes the drink more than necessary.
I have a bar set like this. Plus, any purchases from this link go back to Savor with Jennifer to purchase ingredients for recipe creation at no additional charge to you.
Second, shake until the outside of the shaker is noticeably chilled. If your shaker is metal, it may look almost frosty. You’re not aiming for a slush, but you want tiny ice crystals to form. That texture makes the Cosmopolitan slide smoothly and silkily down the throat.
Third, use proper ingredients and proportions: a quality vodka, a good orange liqueur such as Cointreau, fresh-squeezed citrus, and cranberry juice. My version has a touch more cranberry and citrus than many recipes, which brightens the flavor.
I switch between lemon and lime depending on the garnish and season. For Christmas I prefer lime juice with lime wheels and a few cranberries for color and festive presentation. The rest of the year I often use a lemon twist and lemon juice. Both are excellent — and comparing them side by side makes for a fun tasting experiment.
To prepare: fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice, add the ingredients, then shake for 10–15 seconds until the mixture is ice cold and you see small ice crystals. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist, lime wheel, and/or a few cranberries. Enjoy.
