Do you love slushies and watermelon? Combine the two for a simple, flavorful Watermelon Slush.

Watermelon makes an excellent base for slushies because of its high water content—there’s no need for ice if you freeze the fruit first.

How to make watermelon slushies

  • Cube and freeze the watermelon.
  • Place frozen watermelon chunks in a high-powered blender or food processor.
  • Add lime juice and sugar, then blend until smooth.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy.

How to cut and freeze watermelon cubes

  • Cut a thin slice from one side of the watermelon to create a stable flat base.
  • Slice the watermelon and remove the rind.
  • Cut the flesh into chunks sized to suit your blender or food processor.
  • Arrange the chunks on a parchment-lined baking sheet so they don’t touch. If needed, cover with another sheet of parchment and add more chunks in layers.
  • Wrap the tray with plastic wrap and freeze until solid—about 2–4 hours.
  • Keep the cubes separated while freezing so they don’t stick together.

What type of blender should I use?

A high-powered blender (such as a Breville SuperQ or Vitamix) with a tamper works best. If you don’t have one, use a food processor and scrape down the sides as needed.

Help—my slushie is too thick or won’t blend

  • Let the watermelon thaw slightly for about 10 minutes before blending.
  • Use the tamper to push the chunks toward the blades if your blender has one.
  • If it’s still struggling, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water to help the blades move; it won’t make the slushie watery.

What size watermelon should I use?

A medium watermelon works well for this recipe. It yields about six large servings or roughly twelve smaller portions.

Can I use lemon juice instead of lime?

Yes—lemon juice will give a slightly different but still delicious flavor.

Add a few fresh mint leaves while blending for a minty twist on this easy watermelon slush recipe.
