Once November 1st arrives, the holidays often rush in like a tidal wave of red and green. My instinct is to jump into full planning mode, but this year I’m choosing to slow down. When I dive into over-planning, I miss the small moments that make the season special — like my child quietly staring at the tree in awe while I’m hunting for the perfect bow.
Do you find it hard to slow down during the holidays? Here are five practical tips to help you savor the season without getting swept away by obligations.
1) Make a list. Sit down and list everything that feels like a “must do” this season. Include your family in this process if they can help. Deciding together what truly matters will make it easier to focus on what’s important.
2) Check the list twice. Be realistic as you review your list. It’s easy to overcommit when ideas sound good in theory but aren’t practical for your current season of life. Tweak items to make them manageable, then post the list somewhere visible. Add any date-specific events to the calendar so you don’t accidentally bite off more than you can chew.
3) Let go of perfection. Holiday expectations can build pressure: the perfect tree, flawless cookies, matching outfits. When things don’t go exactly as planned, frustration follows. Instead of striving for perfection, embrace the imperfections. Those imperfect moments are often the most memorable.
4) Remember that saying “no” is healthy for your family. Repeat after me: “I don’t need to attend every holiday event I’m invited to.” Invitations may pile up, but your time and energy are limited. Use your list as a filter and make intentional choices. Saying no sometimes frees you to say yes to meaningful time with loved ones.
5) Focus on the true meaning of Christmas. The season isn’t defined by a perfectly set table or a perfectly decorated house. It’s not about picture-perfect outfits or flawless festivities. For many, the heart of the season is the celebration of Jesus’ birth and the hope that brings. Slowing down helps you reflect on that meaning and share it with others.
