Saturday’s Big Reveal: What Really Happened and Why It Matters

Such a creative post title. Not.

The most exciting part of Saturday’s vegan bake sale wasn’t the food.

It was finally getting to meet my friend Christy in person. She’s the author of the lovely vegan cookbook Blissful Bites, and many of her recipes appear in other popular collections, so meeting her felt a little like meeting a celebrity. I was also fortunate to meet Jade, who organized the whole bake sale.

Christy and I talked for so long I almost forgot to check out the baked goods.

Almost, but not quite.

See my huge smile?

Because it was a good cause—and because I’m indecisive—I went a little wild and bought lots of treats. I tried to remember everything I picked up: a rocky road cake ball, a sweet potato empanada, mini doughnut, cinnamon-sugar doughnut, blueberry muffin, lemon coffeecake muffin, chocolate–peanut butter cookie, banana bread, a cinnamon roll, and a ginger-spice cookie.

Later that evening my friend Amy invited a few people over and I brought the box of goodies. We spent a fun night tasting everything. Some of the items were outstanding; others were just okay. The standout for me was the ginger-spice cookie — it was soft, perfectly spiced, and completely won me over, even though I don’t usually choose spice cookies.

I do have a recipe for raw gingerbread men on my blog, but I’d love to recreate the soft spice cookie I tried at the sale. If the baker of that cookie reads this, thank you — it was money well spent.

Question of the Day:

Have you ever met any of your online friends in person?

If you want a laugh, check out a very old post about my first blogger meetup — it’s still one of my favorite memories.
