Crispy Skillet Onion Dip Recipe for Parties and Snacks

The same night I made the light Creamy Parmesan Spinach Dip, I also tested a homemade French onion dip. It’s a party favorite, but most store-bought versions include long lists of unpronounceable ingredients—no thanks.

Pan-Fried Onion Dip

Sweet, deeply caramelized onions are folded into sour cream and cream cheese for a rich, indulgent dip with a subtle cayenne kick. It’s not a health food, but you can reduce calories by using low-fat cream cheese, sour cream, or mayonnaise if you prefer.

This version was a hit with friends: creamy, comforting, and dangerously addictive—just what a great dip should be.

One caveat: caramelizing onions properly takes time. My batch took longer than I expected, which reminded me of an old Cooking Light piece explaining why recipe times for caramelizing are often underestimated. It’s a patient process, but the resulting depth of flavor makes the effort worthwhile.

Ingredients:
2 large yellow onions
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
¼ cup vegetable oil
¼ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
½ cup sour cream
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (use a vegetarian version if you prefer)
½ cup good-quality mayonnaise

Preparation: Cut the onions in half and slice them into 1/8-inch thick half-moons—about 3 cups total. Heat the butter and oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onions along with the cayenne, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Sauté for about 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for roughly 20 more minutes or until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized. Remove from heat and allow the onions to cool.
Meanwhile, place the cream cheese, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and mayonnaise in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or use a bowl and a sturdy whisk). Beat until smooth and well combined. Stir in the cooled caramelized onions and mix thoroughly. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Chill the dip in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes and up to a few days to let the flavors meld before serving. Serve with chips, crudités, or toasted baguette slices.
