As I planned recipes for Memorial Day, I remembered this festive favorite I made and photographed for the Fourth of July last year but never posted. It’s a classic stained glass Jello — red, white, and blue — and perfect for celebrations.
While Jello isn’t the healthiest option, it’s undeniably fun. Everyone enjoyed this last time. It’s colorful, versatile (you can swap colors to match other holidays or team colors), and visually striking. The steps are straightforward, but the recipe requires several hours of chilling between steps, so allow plenty of time.
This is a cheerful, celebratory dessert to have on hand for honoring our country and those who have served. Happy Memorial Day!

Stained Glass Jello

Pin
Ingredients
- 4 small (3 oz.) boxes of Jell-O or store-brand gelatin dessert in different colors — I used two packages each of strawberry and blueberry
- 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin (such as Knox)
Instructions
-
Prepare a double batch of each flavored Jello (for example, use two boxes of strawberry to make a double strawberry batch, and two boxes of blueberry for a double blueberry batch) according to package directions in two separate 9×13-inch pans. Refrigerate until completely set and chilled.
-
Remove the chilled Jello from the pans and cut each flavor into small squares, about 1/2 inch. Gently transfer the cubes and mix them together, then layer the mixed cubes into a clean 9×13-inch pan.
-
In a separate bowl, sprinkle the 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin over 1/2 cup cold water and let it sit for 3 minutes to bloom. Add 1 1/2 cups boiling water and stir until the gelatin dissolves. Stir in the can of sweetened condensed milk. Chill the milk mixture in the refrigerator 20–30 minutes, until it’s cooled but not set. Pour the cooled milk mixture evenly over the layered Jello cubes. If bubbles form on the surface, gently pop them with a toothpick to smooth the top. Refrigerate overnight to fully set.
-
When fully set, cut the dessert into squares or use cookie cutters for festive shapes, and serve chilled.
